Quality assurance and medical outcomes in the era of cost containment

Cost containment initiatives beginning in the 1970s have matured into ''process'' analysis, which requires unprecedented collaboration among physician specialists, nurses, and hospitals. Current focus is on the cost of care, but it will switch to a greater emphasis on quality as our methods for measuring outcomes of clinical care improve. The history and emerging tools for measurement are described in this article.
