摘要
Despite IP-based communications' huge potential, the mass deployment of converged networks carrying data, voice, and video has not progressed as projected. These distributed systems bring with them nontrivial complexities that require rigorous performance optimization. Joint optimization of network characteristics in the presence of general application-level traffic presents a complex challenge. Queuing strategies, call-admission controls, congestion-avoidance mechanisms, traffic-shaping policies, and policing technologies must each be optimized-often simultaneously-to provide adequate quality of service.
