As a prelude for their use in the engine, it is studied in the laboratory how some physicochemical characteristics of the "anticorrosive emulsifiable oil/water" emulsions employed as cooling water in marine internal combustion engines vary in the course of time. This cooling water has been kept at the engine's standard working temperature in order to evaluate the maximum time interval for which the predetermined optimal values of these characteristics were kept. The tests have been carried out on 2% (v/v) solutions of anticorrosive emulsifiable oil in water, using two different oils. The study has been performed on the previously mentioned solutions which were kept at 85 degrees C for 0, 32, 50, 80, 104, 120, 144, 192 at 242 hours; after which, the same physicochemical characteristics were measured. These characteristics are: pH, specific conductivity, chlorides, hardness and the percentage of anticorrosive emulsifiable oil dissolved in water.
