Economic Aspects in the Context of Integrated Water Resources Management Besides the fact that there is no general understanding of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), it is clear that economic aspects are a key element of IWRM. Verified by an IWRM project in South Africa, the integration of economic aspects in IWRM allows not only to identify the water use efficiency, but also to derive the optimal allocation of water resources to the different water users. Taking additionally into account social equity and ecological sustainability, water shortages in a river basin can be mitigated. Economic aspects therefore are a vital element for an accurate, complete and practicable IWRM.
