C-C bond cleavage in the oxidation of 2-hydroxyoxathiane S,S-dioxide and 2,2'-sulfanediyldiethanol S,S-dioxide

摘要：
Oxidation of the title diol 2 or lactol 3 with hypochlorite gave a halogenation/C-C bond cleavage product rather than the expected lactone, while reaction of 3 with bromine gave a similar result.
