Level crossings - The problems

The meeting started off with a talk on the concise history of the development of level crossings to date and an assessment of future developments in the field. The next talk addressed highway problems posed by level crossings. The possible use of lower road traffic speed restrictions at level crossings was mooted, but the speaker stated that the speed of the road was a question for highway engineers. The third talk concerned aspects of level crossing construction and consisted of a guided slide show describing pertinent aspects of crossings from conception to implementation. A logic path of design was expounded, and relevant construction details were highlighted. The final talk concerned safety problems at level crossings, and the public's perception of the relative safety records of traditional and modern crossings.
