Sugar in Vietnam - Present and future

At present three-quarters of the sugar output in Vietnam is crude sugar produced by households and small processors, crushing from 1 to 50 tcd, There are also 16 sugar mills with a total capacity of 20, 150 tcd which produce plantation white sugar, and three refineries. The Government is actively supporting an ambitious growth programme to build 33 new plants and expand some existing mills by the year 2000, Sugar production is planned to treble to 1.4 million tons a year, Joint venture projects are being encouraged and enterprises with 100% foreign capital are being permitted.
