Remote sensing of air pollution dynamics over large European cities

In large urban areas the air pollution load at any ground location is dependent on many factors like topography. In addition to ground-based air pollution measurements laser remote sensing facilities are now available, With a sensing range 2-4 km the differential absorption LIDAR method allows 3D studies of air pollution dynamics. In this paper presentation with relevant explanations of some typical measurements with a DIAL system during EC MEDCAPHOT-TRACE campaign performed in Athens in the summer of 1994, as well as some results from other European cities in the recent years will be made.
