Particularities of the consultation

The number of cats regularly presented for consultation is on the increase. A cat has its own territory and outside this territory the animal is subjected to stress. This implies adapting our structures and our approach to suit an animal which reacts in different ways, ranging from immobility to aggression. The author of this article attempts to provide an overview of the points that are specific to feline consultation To begin with, an adaptation of facilities is suggested and the necessity to disinfect against dermatophytes is emphasised. Then a discussion follows on the sequence orf events during a consultation and the approach towards the animal with or without the help of facial allomarking pheromones. Finally at the end of the consultation, same questions often asked by cat owners are briefly dealt with breeds still not receiving regular veterinary attention, house-training, the dangers of zoonosis and cat hair allergy.
