摘要
This study is conducted to investigate the needs and wants of English language writing and speaking proficiency skills from learners' prospective for effective professional Communication for the engineering students of the school of engineering, University of Management & Technology, Pakistan. Need analysis is an on-going process at every stage of language teaching and learning the self-assessment by each student is considered as important as assessment by teachers. There are very few studies, conducted for the needs and language problems of the engineering students in Pakistan so this study is to fill the gap. For this study, a close ended questionnaire of 20 items was developed to elicit the opinion of 100 engineering students. Finding of this need analysis guided the existing language class contents and the pedagogies to develop more effective English language and communication course for the engineering students. This study was motivated by the vision that "Needs analysis is neither unique to language teaching nor within language training but it is often seen as being the corner stone of ESP and leads to a very focused course"[8].
