摘要
BRCA1 is a breast cancer susceptibility gene that was isolated in 1994. It is thought to function as a classic tumor suppressor gene, with loss of both alleles required for tumor initiation. While the function of BRCA1 has not yet been fully elucidated, recent studies support a role in cell cycling and cellular response to DNA damage. In addition, there are data to suggest that BRCA1 may be a component of the Rad51-p53-p21 cellular pathway that recognizes damaged DNA and produces a growth arrest to allow DNA repair to occur, or induces apoptosis.
