Over 300 delegates participated in an international conference focusing Indonesia, 28-30 October 1996. Subtitled 'Towards a Sustainable Future: Balancing Conservation and Development: the conference was hosted by Gadjah Mada University in association with the Association of Indonesian Archaeologists, the Indonesian Anthropological Association and the Indonesian Sociological Association, with support from UNESCO and several Ministries in the Republic of Indonesia.
