The Molikpaq was deployed in the Canadian Beaufort Sea during the 1980s. It was equipped with instrumentation to measure its response to ice loads. Part of that instrumentation consisted of Medof ice load panels that were attached to the outer faces of the Molikpaq. A total of 31 panels in arrays of 4 or 5 panels were distributed on three faces. Each panel had an area of about 3 m(2) and the arrays areas of 12 or 15m(2). Grouping the ice loads measured by the panels in various ways allowed average ice pressure as a function of area, and vertical and horizontal distributions of ice loads to be determined. The methodology for this procedure will be explained and demonstrated for selected cases of first-year sea ice features interacting with the Molikpaq.
