摘要
The complexities associated with aging challenge advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to ensure that each patient receives an individualized evaluation. Determining whether the patient should remain in an independent or alternative living environment must be based on respect for the individual's right to self-determination and on the evidence, including assessment of biological, social, and cognitive resources. This determination also must be communicated in a clear and appropriate manner to the patient and family. This article describes the nature of this decision, appropriate assessment strategies, and legal considerations for the APRN who works with elderly patients and their families.
