IDENTITY NEGOTIATION: THE ROMA WHO ARE AND ARE NOT

Ethnicity is a social construct and thus liable to negotiation. The processes of negotiations are characteristic especially for those situations when the group does not have a clear, unequivocal identity, but, in the existent social/ethnic classification, is located,between and betwixt" the established categories. The papers presents the identity versatility depending on the situation and the complex processes of negotiation using the example of Djorgovci, the so-called Serbian Gypsies and Boyash, three groups which both are and are not Roma and which both are and are not others and other ethnicity.
