The author has undertaken a Labananalysis of the movement style of Tortola Valencia (1882-1955), an early modern dancer. Utilizing the sources of an extensive newspaper clipping archive, photographs, and a 1915 film excerpt, how much can be reliably determined without the benefit of direct observation of the live moving subject? Can the written observations of others be trusted to substitute for the eye of the trained movement observer? These are issues that arise in the attempt to capture the essence of style from past eras.
