Thermodynamic stability of samarium and europium chlorides in molten alkali metal chlorides

摘要
The formal standard redox potentials of samarium (E-Sm/Sm(*3+2+)) and europium (E-Eu/Eu(*3+2+)) in molten alkali metal chlorides have been investigated by potentiometric method versus standard chlorine reference electrode. The stability of the samarium and europium divalent chlorides in alkali metal chloride solutions has been established. The equilibrium pressure of chlorine over alkali metal chloride melts containing samarium or europium trichlorides and equilibrium constants for the reaction LnCl(3(l))double left right arrowLnCl(2(l))+1/2Cl(2(g)) were estimated for the salt systems studied. The effect of the cationic composition of the melt-solvent on the thermodynamic properties above mentioned has been also reported.
