摘要
Arsenic toxicity has become a global concern owing to the ever-increasing contamination of water, soil and crops in many regions of the world. Microorganisms have evolved a wide spectrum of pathways such as oxidation/reduction, compartmentalization, exclusion, and immobilization as the main natural defense mechanisms to arsenic. This short review highlights our current understanding of the ecology, genes and enzymes involved in natural arsenic metabolisms, and some successful examples of engineered microbes that harness these natural mechanisms for effective remediation.
