This paper focuses on describing the phenomenon of parametric roll resonance with the emphasis on the physics that governs such a motion. It reviews the various approaches adopted to represent that effect, including models with 1, 1.5, 3 and 6 degrees of freedom (DOF). It mentions the parametric resonance observed in head seas in a post-Panamax, C11 class containership which proved to be particularly prone to exhibit this behaviour and presents some results of parametric roll obtained for that ship with a time-domain, non-linear, 6 DOF numerical code.
