Partisanship over time: A comparison of United States panel data

In this article we examine five multi-wave panels to assess the stability of party identification over different lengths of time Our findings indicate that many people do change their place on the NES seven-point partisanship scale on a frequent basis, but that most do not move very far What is perhaps most interesting is that the respondents in a short ten-month NES panel were almost as likely to change their partisanship as the interviewees in panels that spanned much longer periods.
