摘要：
Commuting is an important travel activity in all major metropolitan cities. Its highly concentrated spatial and temporal patterns pose great challenges on transport policy and planning. Using the data collected from the Hong Kong Travel Characteristics Survey 2002, the commuting characteristics of residents in this metropolitan city were analyzed. Major commuting trip generation and attraction areas were analyzed by the residential location data collected in the Travel Characteristics Survey and the employment data collected by the Census and Statistics Department. The findings suggest that the heavy railway system can play a more important role in contributing to sustainable transport in Hong Kong.
