THE MYTH OF OEDIPUS IN THE INTERPRETATION OF BRUNO GENTILI

Bruno Gentili's engagement with Sophocles' Oedipus the King spanned his scholarly career and found expression at every level, philological, interpretative, comparative, and also in translation. In the great conference on the Oedipus myth that he organized in 1982, he also gave space to the forms of the Oedipus myth in contemporary culture. His two articles on the Sophodean tragedy were, however, his fundamental contributions on Oedipus. To the structuralism of Jean-Pierre Vernant, he opposed the semantic analysis of the myth as mediated in the language of tragedy in Athens in the fifth century B.C.E. The method and the results of these articles retain their freshness.
