Fuzzy logic based fault detection and diagnosis: an automated design methodology

Fault detection and diagnosis are fundamental steps in maintaining high quality standards in electronic circuits mass production, while keeping the costs at a minimal level. This paper proposes an automated method for designing a fuzzy logic system for the fault detection and fault diagnosis of electronic circuits. Data from the real circuit and from its simulated version is acquired and processed, so that the fuzzy system's rules can be established. The rules model the faulty functioning of the circuit, as well as the fault-free state. The activation degree of each rule will indicate the faulty component. The entire process is automated by means of the MATLAB environment. Tests were carried out on a triangular and rectangular signal generator circuit, assuming the passive components were faulty, and the signals' amplitudes and frequency are the measurements of interest. Based on whether the measured values are low, normal or high, and by means of the fuzzy inference, the system successfully achieves fault detection and diagnosis.
