The National Library of Scotland (NLS) is in a unique position compared to other national libraries as it is a national library of a devolved nation in a larger country. Its legal deposit right extends not only to Scotland, but also to publications issued in the whole of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. A short historical overview of legal deposit libraries in the UK and Ireland is followed by a brief discussion of current developments in NLS and its Music Collections concluding with a report on recent participation in a mass digitisation project.
