Since the implementation of the Vocational Qualification Certificate System in China, a "certification craze" has emerged among higher vocational college students who are taking certification exams in order to increase their chances in securing a job. However, with the mentality that "half a loaf is better than no bread", many of them act blindly, regardless of the time, money and energy wasted on needless certificates. Analysis of questionnaires of 188 English major graduates and ones of 117 companies shows that vocational students need to take career planning into consideration when they prepare for certification exams. Prior to certification exams, students need to receive a practical career orientation and an opportunity to set sequential and measurable career goals. Furthermore, Business English majors need to strengthen their ability to communicate in English in a business setting. With a long term career plan, they need to build their competitive edge to win in their careers.
