Independence, equality, and posssession. Saint Just and the "Trinome Republicain"

This article concentrates on the importance of the terms "independence" "equality" and "possession" in the political thought of Saint-Just, and on the originality of the theoretical form of "trinome" republican. This foundation of a new republican ethic, the expression of the affirmation of a moral order on a political order, and the regeneration of "moeurs" and the individual, is for Saint-Just the result of the recovery of the principles of Nature, principles which by the action of the trinome impedes the establishment of coercion and domination. In Saint-Just's view, the application of this original theoretical structure promotes a complete symbiosis between the individual and society. This does not mean the loss of individual liberty, but rather the achievement of republican liberty understood as non-domination, and conceived as a guarantee for the individual and for the republican city.
