This work is to analyse the ocean altimetry precision of Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R) based on the statistics of observed waveform. The GPS L5 signals obtained from an airborne experiment are used for this study. The altimetry precision is analysed for two specific algorithms, based on the leading edge derivative (DER) and the leading edge fitting (FIT), in which the relationship between the altimetry precision and the waveform statistics is established and validated. Then, we introduce an analytical model of the statistics of the incoherently averaged waveform, which has been validated with both airborne and spaceborne data. Finally, as an example, the altimetry precision is predicted for the GEROS-ISS mission, and preliminary results are presented.
