In 1883 Gustav de Laval was granted a patent for a geared axial-flow stream engine. In the early 1900s Birger Ljungstrom invented the double-rotating radial-flow turbine. The two companies built up around these products were merged to become what is today ABB STAL AB. Development of gas turbines began in the 1940s. Today ABB STAL design and manufactures industrial and utility steam and gas turbines for power plant, marine propulsion, and mechanical drive purposes.
