摘要
Gastrointestinal infections are common and usually resolve without residual problems, but in a small minority, gut function remains abnormal. Conventional assessments are normal and such patients are diagnosed as having "functional disorders" ranging from gastroparesis to irritable bowel syndrome. Precipitating infections include a range of viruses, bacterial gastroenteritis, and acute diverticulitis affecting all ages. Putative mechanisms are discussed.
