摘要
The number of elderly patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) is growing and leads to challenges in deciding the proper modality of treatment for these patients. The majority of these patients will not be candidates for transplantation and thus, the choice is between medical management, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Each of these choices had advantages and disadvantages and ultimately the decision to select a course of therapy must be individualized based upon the benefits and risks of the therapy, patient comorbidities, family and community resources and frank discussions regarding goals of care and end-of-life issues.
