The new sol-gel-derived silica films containing unsaturated long chain ester moieties were fabricated by spin-coating on to glass substrates. The films were pre-doped with the oxygen-sensitive luminescent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), whose emission are quenched in the presence of oxygen. Compared with traditional tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)/Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) films, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyl methacrylate (PMA-TMS) Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) films were found to be better in film-formation property, higher in quenching response for oxygen and shorter in response time. All improvements are due to the unsaturated long chain ester moieties in resultant sol-gel films.
