This paper presents a virtual enterprise model used in networking international expert teams from academia and business in the area of data mining and decision support. The knowledge management aspects of business intelligence as implemented in the virtual enterprise model are analyzed in terms of (a) the appropriate business, organizational and management models, (b) the need for knowledge management and the construction of a knowledge map of the available tools, expertise and collaborative work procedures, (c) the cognitive authority in collaborative work management, as well as (d) the network intelligence aspect of the virtual enterprise endeavor. The project Data Mining and Decision Support for Business Competitiveness: A European Virtual Enterprise (SolEuNet) is used as a case study and the source of lessons learned.
