Life behind bars: Why honey bees feed small hive beetles

Small hive beetles (SHB) continue to be a problem for beekeepers in the Southeast and they are spreading into other areas of the United States. Prior to the arrival of SHB to the U.S., only two papers on the menace existed, one by A.E. Lundie (1940), and another by M.D. Schmolke (1974). Both authors seem to down play the threat of SHB and only hint towards the beetles' potential to inflict severe damage to honey bee colonies.
