The influence iron and isoprinosine on haematological parameters in piglets

Iron is very important for normal growth and development of neonatals and its deficiency is the main cause of haematological disorders responsible for anaemia in piglets., The aim of the study was to estimate the effectiveness of iron and isoprinosine (methisoprinol), in protecting of piglets against anaemia, in particular their influence on the haematological parameters of the treated animals. The study was conducted in the experimental farm of the National Veterinary Research Institute and included a total of 9 litters (88 piglets). Ferran 100, IsoFerran and Isoprivet (VETAGRO) were administered to protect the piglets from anaemia. The number of erythrocytes, mean corpuscular volume (MCV); haematocrit (HCT); mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and blood haemoglobin concentration were estimated. The safety and the effectiveness of the therapy was estimated based on the adverse reactions observed after the drugs were applied, as well as on the physical condition and production parameters observed in the experimental animals (mainly daily body weight-gain of the pigs). The application of the iron, did not cause any adverse reaction. The health condition and production parameters of the experimental animals was very good at the end of the observation period, moreover, this prophylactic programme resulted in a significant decrease of deaths amongst the piglets. The best production parameters were observed after the administration of iron combined with isoprinosine (IsoFerran),with additionally stimulating the immune system by isoprinosine at 2 days before weaning. Haematological analysis demonstrated that the application of iron was very effective. No differences between piglets treated with Ferran 100 and Isoferran were observed - both drugs were very efficient in the protection the piglets against anaemia. An additional injection of isoprinosinie before weaning did not significantly influence the analysed parameters of red blood cells.
