Many original articles, especially in the journal History of Psychiatry, have provided valuable insights into how the mentally ill have been treated in different societies. A number of professional controversies have been addressed, including the social historian versus clinician-historian issue; the pro-Freud/ anti-freud debate; and the nature of 'community care' in the 19th century.
