Development Prospects for the Asia-Russia-Europe Transport Corridor

The article deals with the formation of an international transport corridor in the framework of the Russia-Mongolia-China Economic Corridor program. It presents a SWOT analysis of the Euro-Asian transport networks provided by international transport corridors connecting Europe and Asia. It also lists their strengths and weaknesses, considers possibilities and threats incidental to their formation and notes the importance of this transport corridor in connection with the ratification of the Intergovernmental Agreement on International Road Transport along the Asian Highway Network, including the AN-3 network, starting from the Chinese port city of Tianjin, then running through Mongolia to Ulan-Ude. From this point of view, it is the territory of the Republic of Buryatia (RB) that is coming to the fore in the development and implementation of the Russia-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor program and can become the main transportation hub in eastern Russia. In spite of the currently increased freight turnover on the rail and road transport in the Republic of Buryatia, the current conditions for the socio-economic development of the Republic are not conducive to the successful implementation of the project for the creation of the ITC (International Transport Corridor). Therefore, the study suggests that there is an expedient need to create a joint expert working group of representatives from Russia, Mongolia and China to coordinate the implementation of transport and infrastructure projects of the Economic Corridor program. The paper considers the main directions and issues for joint discussion.
