摘要
Wormfarming involves conversion of organic matter into a stable organic product using earthworms. Potentially pathogenic bacteria in the feedstock may survive the process and constitute a hazard for operators packaging, distributing or using the product. This study surveyed ten sites for faecal coliforms, Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter Listeria sp., Listeria monocytogenes and Legionella. Faecal coliforms were found at three sites, Listeria at five sites and one isolate of Legionella was detected in a final product. Schools and kindergartens often operate small-scale wormfarms, and it was from a kindergarten that Legionella was isolated. Sensible hygienic handling and possible hazard labeling would reduce the risk for anyone collecting or using wormfarm products.
