摘要
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of celiac disease (CD) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) treated in the Children's Division of Endocrinology, at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Hospital das Clinicas. Subjects and methods: Children and adolescents diagnosed with T1DM, aged 0 to 18 year, were included in this study performed from March 1999 to April 2009. All patients were screened for CD at their first visit and, again, annually. The investigation was performed through the measurement of IgA (AGAA) and IgG (AGAG) antigliadin antibodies. Patients with values of AGAA and/or AGAG above two times the cutoff mark undertook intestinal biopsy. Results: A group of 21 patients were excluded from the initial total of 384 patients. Out of the remaining, 50 patients had positive serology and 29 underwent intestinal biopsy. The prevalence index was 3.1%. Conclusion: The periodic screening of CD in diabetic patients should be encouraged, due to its high prevalence.
