A study on the mechanism of desulphurisation and dephosphorisation of liquid steel by Na2CO3 flux treatment

摘要
An investigation was undertaken to examine the mechanism of refining liquid steel by Na2CO3 flux treatment. EDX and XRD analysis of a sample of the slag formed after Na2CO3 flux treatment of liquid steel in an induction furnace suggests that sulphur and phosphorus are removed mainly as sodium sulphides and sodium phosphides and partly as silicon sulphide and silicon phosphide. A part of the sodium vapour generated through reduction of Na2O burns over the bath. Iron and traces of other elements are also vaporised from the induction furnace bath. Oxides of these elements are co-deposited with sodium oxide.
