For detecting the occurrence of leak immediately and locating the exact leak position, mathematic model for pipeline leak is established and the transmit process of instantaneous negative pressure wave is investigated and program software is made up to simulate leak in the pipeline. Based on this, instantaneous negative pressure wave is used to detect the occurrence of leak in the experiment pipeline. Pressure sensor and A/D collecting exchange chip are used to collect the observe point pressure. Dealing with the pressure data with the technique of polar correlation, the different time between the time of instantaneous negative pressure wave transmitting to the first observe point in the pipeline head and the time of instantaneous negative pressure wave transmitting to the second observe point in the pipeline end is got. With the different time, leak position is exactly located. The results of this experiment certificate that using instantaneous negative pressure wave to detect the occurrence of leak is available and locating leak position with the technique of polar correlation is accurate.
