Gordon Rupp was a Fellow of Emmanuel and Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge and King's College, London. He also held doctorates in Divinity from Cambridge, Aberdeen and Paris. During the Second World War, he served as a Methodist minister and later became a tutor at Richmond College and a lecturer in Divinity at Cambridge. He was the first Professor of Church History at Manchester University in 1956. Appointed Principal of Wesley House, Cambridge, in 1967 he was subsequently appointed Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History in the University, and invited as a guest speaker at St Dunstan's church, Canterbury. To Moltke. In this paper, Gordon Rupp seeks to interpret the character of Thomas More, particularly in relation to his lay vocation and his Chelsea household. He continues to draw comparisons between More's death and the witness of later martyrs: particularly Helmut von Moltke, Admiral Canaris and Dietrich Bonhoffer.
