Photodynamic therapy for superficial esophageal carcinoma

We report the results of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for twelve patients with superficial esophageal carcinoma. Most of these patients underwent PDT after endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) because of the remnant cancer. Complete remission after first PDT was obtained in 10 patients (83.3 %). Two patients with residual or recurrent cancer after first PDT underwent additional PDT course and were cured. PDT can become a curative treatment modality for superficial carcinoma of the esophagus without lymphogenous or hematogenous metastasis. No severe complication was observed. One patients had skin photosensitivity as PDT associated complication after the discharge from the hospital. PDT seems to be a effective, safe and promising modality in treating for superficial esophageal carcinoma that can not be completely resected by EMR.
