On the volume-dependence of the Gruneisen parameter and the Lindemann law of melting

摘要
It has been shown by Errandonea (Physica B 357 (2005) 356) that the Lindemann law cannot reproduce the high pressure melting curves of transition metals. Using an expression for the volume dependence of the Gruneisen parameter gamma originally due to Burakovsky and Preston (J. Phys. Chem. Solids 65 (2004) 1581), Errandonea determined the constants appearing in the expression of gamma by making the Lindemann law to match the experimental melting data. The results for the volume dependence of gamma thus obtained by Errandonea are shown here to be much different from those determined using the Burakovsky-Preston approach. A direct comparison of the results based on the two approaches has been presented for the transition metal Mo. It is reinforced that the Lindemann law does not work satisfactorily for the transition metals with low slopes of melting curves. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
