Use of the Impression Creep Test Method for Determining Minimum Creep Strain Rate Data

In this paper, several technical and practical issues, related to the impression creep test technique, involving the conversion relationships between the impression creep data and the corresponding uniaxial data, and the application of the test method to iso-thermal and iso-load stepped test conditions, are discussed. Typical test results which validate the method are presented. Recent results obtained from P91 tests, at 650 degrees C, with different sized specimens, are presented. In addition, test results obtained from tests of specimens removed from a failed CrMoV uniaxial specimen (after > 40,000 hrs testing at 600 degrees C and 40 MPa) are presented. Future exploitation and improvements of the technique are briefly discussed.
