Vitroplants growth and the microtuberization of two potato materials

Micropropagation is an alternative in the production of pre-basic seed potatoes in Venezuela. For this purpose, the growth of vitroplants and microtuberization of potato 'Kennebec' and clone 393193-16 (CIP) were evaluated. Vitroplants were obtained from nodal segments cultured on MS medium, and for microtuberization, this medium received 40 and 60 g.L-1 sucrose (SU), in combination with 2, 4 and 6 mg.L-1 benzyladenine (BA). 'Kennebec' showed greater growth, while branching tended to be higher in the clone. The clone produced greater number of microtubers than 'Kennebec' (7.37 vs. 5.43 per repeat). The microtuber biomass was superior for 'Kennebec' at any concentration of SU, and in combination with 6 mg.L-1 BA. 'Kennebec' showed highest growth and the clone more production of microtubers.
