Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreaticography in Children

The aim of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate indications, findings, therapeutic success and complications of ERCP in children at our institution. During a four year period 15 children, age from 3 to 14 years, were examined and enrolled in this series. In most of the cases a therapeutic ERCP was required and compared to adults a lower incidence of malignant diseases was noted. In the majority, procedures were performed under general anesthesia. The therapeutic success rate of biliary interventions was high, but pancreatic interventions were associated with only temporary improvement in symptoms in most cases. With only one procedure related episode of pancreatitis, the complication rate was low. Comparable to results of larger series, in our experience, ERCP in children is safe and provides valuable results. An experienced interdisciplinary team is required for indication, performing the endoscopic procedure as well as for the care of the children.
