Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Croatia

Since May 2006 Deutsche Gesellschaft Mr Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) on behalf of the German Bundesministerium fur wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and in cooperation with the Croatian Ministry of Environmental Protection, Spatial Planning and Construction implements the project "Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) at the Croatian Adriatic coast". The project has started its activities in a pilot area covering the cities of Kraljevica, Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski on the mainland and the municipalities of Omisalj and Dobrinj on the island of Krk. All five local government units are implementation partners of the project. The text below presents an overview on the approach of Integrated Coastal Zone Management as development practice on the Croatian coast throughout the concrete project focused on the exact part of Croatian coast. After the wider approach is explained (Barcelona Convention), activities within the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project are stressed out. This can help for better understanding of the difficulties Croatian coast is facing.
