A considerable amount of research and development has followed the Clapham accident of 1988 where one MKI passenger train ran at speed into the rear of another MKI passenger train. In response to the enquiry led by Sir Anthony Hidden an extensive amount of information and experience has been gained by the undertaking of accident investigations and the use of computer simulations and instrumented tests. One of the results from this programme of work has been the development of a crashworthy rail passenger seat. The object of this paper is to describe the phases undertaken during the project which culminated in a productionised crashworthy rail passenger seat.
