Mechanical Noise Problems in the Internal Combustion Engine - The Example of Piston Noise

Piston noise is a type of engine noise that often leads to subjective complaints in the vehicle. The typical problems and the associated excitation mechanisms are well known, however, the steadily evolving demands of new engines often require new approaches. Today, this is done using modern simulation methods in the early phases of engine development. Risks for the known problems can be minimised and basic problems of piston design - also with respect to engine friction - can be solved. Because of difficult to determine boundary conditions, success often is incomplete - subjective evaluation and optimisation of hardware supported by computer simulation are still necessary.
