Sustained improvements and investment in the San Francisco Bay Area's building portfolio are gradually increasing the prominence of lifeline system performance in achieving household and business functionality following a future earthquake. Most modern urban social and economic systems require the function of numerous lifeline systems and the failure of a single lifeline can displace households or keep businesses closed. In the San Francisco Bay Area, a local and regional collaborative convening platform is creating a space for lifeline operators to develop a common operating picture with cities to develop balanced resilience actions that can be taken before and after acute shocks.
